Short Description Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in treatment of children/adolescents, families, couples, and individuals

Description I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in treatment of children and adolescents and their families. Whether your family is going through a stressful transition, experiencing conflict, or managing mental health issues or behavioral challenges, we will join forces to create effective and lasting change. I have over ten years of experience working with families, couples, adults, and youth of all ages. Splitting my time between private practice and non-profit agencies has given me experience treating a diverse range of challenges, diagnoses, family and life circumstances. During the therapeutic process, I want you to feel supported and heard, and we will work together to individualize treatment. I am approachable, genuine, and particularly skilled at building trust with "hard to reach" kids and teens. My approach is strengths-based and systemic, meaning that, particularly in my work with families and couples, our goal is to gain insight about each member’s role and how they impact the functioning of the whole system. This approach reduces blame and shame and empowers each person to make changes that will positively impact their relationships. For individuals, systemic therapy examines the way that life experiences, family history, culture, biological and psychological factors, and social relationships impact mental health and behaviors. I am trained in and use evidence-based therapy models, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which integrates managing emotions, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills; Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy; trauma-informed practices for the treatment of anxiety and stress disorders; art and play therapy, which promote self-expression; meditation and mindfulness for stress management; and the Nurtured Heart Approach, a positive parenting and discipline model. I am an adoption-competent practitioner and have significant experience with the foster care/adoption, special education, and juvenile justice systems. I have a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in Applied Family and Child Studies and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in Psychology.
